The 5 Dysfunctions of a Team, by Patrick Lencioni

Overview: Patrick Lencioni discusses five key challenges that derail teams: the Absence of Trust, Fear of Conflict, Lack of Commitment, Avoidance of Accountability, and Inattention to Results.

Key Takeaway: Many people avoid conflict, or view conflict as inherently negative. Productive conflict is also necessary. Once teams have established trust, they are better equipped to genuinely share their perspectives and engage in a certain amount of productive conflict. Once a decision is reached, the goal is for sufficient discussion to be sure everyone felt heard enough to buy in to the final decision. The goal isn't always consensus, or full agreement. The goal is for everyone to buy in so they can move forward to commitment and accountability.

Bonus Tip: Conflict exists on a continuum. On the constructive side is artificial harmony (which often looks like office politics), and on the destructive side are mean-spirited personal attacks. Ideal conflict sits at the midway point, balancing constructive and direct discussion with trust.
